Black Terrier
Let us introduce you to the pride of Russian cynology (science about dogs) the Black Russian Terrier, bred in Russia in the beginning of the 1950’s.
It is a very young breed. It’s development was based on already existing elite dog breeds, such as the Giant Schnauzer, Airedale, Rottweiler and Newfoundland, crossbreeding them with the Great Dane, Caucasian Shepherd and many other breeds. In total about 17 breeds were used in the experiment.
The intent of the process of creating the Black
Russian Terrier was to produce a large and strong dog

Only in the beginning of the 1980’s did the Black Russian Terrier debut in the dog show in Holland. The popularity of the breed is growing at an astonishing rate in many countries all over the world thanks to the combination of unique qualities of a guard dog and a companion dog. It is with affection that Finnish breeders have named this breed the “Black Pearl of Russia”.
It is difficult to pass Black Russian Terrier on the street without turning your head. Blacky has an extravagant appearance; it is a handsome dog with rich coat and luxurious beard and mustache, well-developed muscles and massive bone structure. The height of the dogs varies from 66 to 80 cm at the withers. The “Russian Giant” has a combination of strength and power coupled with grace and elegance. The uniqueness of the breed allows the BRT to live equally successfully in the backyard of the country house and in an apartment. Despite his large frame at home the dog is very compact and would take up relatively little space and will never bother or bug the owner.
Ideal character, stable temperament and the lively mind of the BRT provide a real pleasure to their owners. An astonishingly delicate understanding of human nature sets Blackies apart from other breeds. They communicate with children very well, with care and tenderness, allowing doing virtually everything to them. Parents can safely leave their children with that “Bearded babysitter”. In the family the BRT is a placid and very tender companion.
BRTs enjoy following their owner during the long hikes, Blacky loves to swim and will fetch for its owner from water with a great joy. Actually, all BRT owners are sure that this is an extraordinary dog concerning its general appearance, working abilities and, of utmost importance, its exceptional character.
If that
shaggy black giant comes to your home, it will not only be your
faithful friend, but also a reliable guard for your family. Blacky
works both at home and during the walk. BRT knows for sure that the
only work he has is to guard the owner, its “pack” and home. This
dog does not attack without a reason, but in
BRT is a working breed. And it means that the four-legged Hercules with its strength and power, intellect and craft needs to be very well trained and educated, and it is especially important for the dog living in the city.
Overall, the BRT nature can be described pretty briefly as follows: protective, but not aggressive, independent, but not stubborn, a friend, but not a slave.
Despite the fact that the Black Russian Terriers have already received a great acknowledgement and become popular in many countries in the world, this breed is still not very common in Latvia. If you like our story and want to get a puppy of this breed we will be happy to see you in our club.
