Central
Asian Ovtcharka (CAO)
It
is considered
that the Central Asian Shepherd dog is known for only 4 thousands of
years, this is calculated from when dogs with cropped ears and tail
were mentioned for the first time. But the interesting thing was
that even when the ancient Asian people arrived to these blessed
lands the whole package already existed:
Akhal Teke
horses, vineyards, carpet weaving as well as Asian wolfhounds. Some
researchers consider that if we dig into history it appears that
Russians, Vikings and Osetins have done more for the creation of
this breed, than Tadzhiks or Turkmens. The Osetin Wolfhounds (in
Europe they were called Allans) and the Middle Asian Sheepdogs,
which disappeared in the course of time, have common roots with the
Central Asian Sheepdogs. Thus, the Central Asian Sheepdogs are the
product of cultural breeding by professionals of ancient highly
developed civilizations of a considerably earlier period than 4000
years ago.

With time Asian people emphasized on one or another quality of the
Central Asia Sheepdog thus creating sets of inbreeds types. Famous
“Alabay” is just one of the types and does not represent the breed
as a whole. By the way, Alabais are characterized by sleepiness,
laziness and tendency toward fighting with other dogs. At the same
time, after becoming popular because of their size, they began to
displace other, no less attractive types of Central Asian Sheepdogs.
Speaking about the latter, their characteristic features are:
sharp minds and splendid intuition from early childhood as well as
the innate ability to evaluate situation and "to figure out” people
and late behavioral maturation. Simply stated, even at the age of
one year enormous 70 kilogram (154 pounds) males can have fun like a
puppy. However, at 1.5 years it will begin to establish its
relationship in the pack and this is when the solid resistance
against its temper by all the members of family will be necessary.
Therefore training is required as early as possible in order to
avoid disaster.
What
is required from the owners?
It is perseverance and patience and on no account force. Beating the
Central Asian Sheepdog is as worthless as beating a wall. Because
the dog is barely sensitive to pain the owner will only cripple his
hand.
A puppy of the aborigine breed grows and develops
in a pack, which now is his human family.
Try to punish it with the absence of your attention. The peoples of
Central Asia respectfully say about the dogs – half-people and
half-dogs. It can sound strange, but in the nature of Central Asian
Sheepdog there are a lot of qualities inherent in man. Therefore if
the friend-owner is offended, the Central Asia Sheepdog will find a
way to apologize and will do this in a simple and elegant way. Do
not be frightened when you feel that your dog "answers" you without
words or does exactly what you want him to do without being asked.
Remember, this is the Central Asian Sheepdog before you. It is
possible to keep a Central Asian Sheepdog in an apartment. But this
is like a scientific experiment, in which somebody will definitely
suffer and most likely it is going to be the dog. Everyday walks for
up to 2 hours and not less then 15 km are necessary for the dog.
Otherwise its joints, which are historically adopted to endure a lot
of physical activity, will be affected.
